It is the ordinary friction: how a shift is handed over, how directly a supervisor gives feedback, how long it takes to feel competent again after being competent at home.

I spent a year in commercial swine production at Smithfield Foods through The Ohio Program. Years later I came back to Ohio State to work on the same kind of program, now responsible for participants from more than twenty countries.

What I underestimated as a participant

The host matters as much as the placement. A well-prepared host company turns a difficult first month into a steep but survivable learning curve. An unprepared one turns the same month into attrition. As a participant, I assumed the program’s job was to prepare me. Half of it is preparing the other side.

Technical competence transfers; context does not. I knew agronomy. I did not know the unspoken rules of an American workplace, and nobody had told me those were also part of the job.

The value shows up late. The most useful part of that year was not what I learned about swine production. It was learning to be effective in a system I did not grow up in — which is the skill I now use every day.

What I did not see until I was on the program side

Behind every smooth exchange there is unglamorous operational work: screening that catches a mismatch before it becomes a crisis, an orientation that names the cultural differences out loud instead of hoping people figure them out, a follow-up call at week three when problems are still small.

Programs fail in the details, not in the design. Almost every serious issue I handle now could have been prevented by a conversation that should have happened earlier.

Why I keep doing this

There is a specific satisfaction in being on the other end of a call from someone in their first difficult week, knowing precisely what they are feeling because I felt it in a farrowing barn in 2018.

That is not a credential. But it does change how you build a program.

In 2018 I arrived in the United States as an intern on a swine farm.
